Lion Dancing and Prosperity Salad!

We had a great invitation to join our friend (and real estate agent) Margaret and her family for a Chinese New Year dinner this past Saturday evening.  We were thrilled to be invited and struggled for days before hand on what would be the proper things to bring our hostess.  Throughout the CNY, there are many rituals and things that represent good luck and fortune that are very important to the whole season.  We finally decided that the mandarin oranges would be perfect and we brought lots of other smaller hostess gifts.  In return, Ben and Nicky received Hung Bao (red packets) with money in it from every adult at the party!  It is a tradition to give the children these red packets during the Chinese New Year.  Wow – they got rich!

Another tradition we were lucky enough to participate in at Margaret’s house was sharing a Yu Sheng (Prosperity Salad).  This salad is served in the center of a table and all the participants take their chop sticks to toss the many, many ingredients of the salad together while reciting good wishes and prayers for the up coming year.  Margaret said, “The messier – the better!”   So, you are supposed to toss the salad high and with enthusiasm.  We all participated!

The next night, we had a big Chinese New Year block party on our street.  As we did last year, we hired a lion dance to come to the street for all the kids to enjoy.  This year’s dance included two lions!

  1. Very cool indeed. Naomi has a couple of friends in school who spent some time living in China so their mom came in and gave a Chinese New Year presentation to the kids. Each received one of those red packets, but instead of being filled with money, they contained a sheet of information all about the holiday and the year of the Rabbit. They ordered Chinese food and made lanterns. They had a ball!

    1. HI! I loved your comment on CNY…seems like the East is moving West and the West is moving East…everytime I go into the “malls” around here, I’m seeing more and more stuff that I recognize from the USA. It was never here when we first moved here. Anyway, your party and presentation sounds really great!

Are you still enjoying time off or are you working more and more? I wonder how it’s going….I saw some picts of you on Facebook at a play date (I think) and I was thinking that looked fun for YOU!

I’m almost ready to lock in our trip. Definitely starting in DC…while Dave goes to his conference. So, we’ll stay at his hotel (and be away in the wee hours again 🙂 ) and we’ll see you every chance we can. I’d love to go to that LEGO exhibit you sent me…I think it’ll still be going on ??? Would you guys like that?

Looking forward to summer! xo, sue
