Gong Xi Fa Cai from Singapore – Lion Dance

It’s Chinese New Year and what a time it is!

First, here is a short video of the lion dance at my neighbor’s house.  The lion dance and all the loud music is intended to scare bad spirits away.  It scared Nicky a bit, too!

After the lion arrives he dances around a plate of oranges left for him by his hosts.  Oranges signify wealth and prosperity because the word for orange  in Chinese is the same as the word for gold.

Then he grabs an orange and, after a bit more dancing, he spits it out his mouth!

Here comes the orange!
Here comes the orange!

Guess who was lucky enough to catch the orange?

Ben catches the orange!

Then the lion continues to dance while “preparing” the oranges:

Happy New Year!

What a fantastic event!!
